FMGE vs NEXT: What Changes for MBBS Abroad Graduates

Every MBBS graduate from a foreign university must clear a licensing screening test before practising in India. Today, that's the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) — a qualifying-only test covering core clinical subjects.

The National Exit Test (NEXT) is being phased in as a common final-year licensing exam for both Indian and foreign medical graduates, eventually replacing FMGE. Until the transition is complete, FMGE remains the exam foreign graduates need to clear.

Neither exam should be treated as an afterthought. The universities we work with build FMGE-oriented revision into the later years of the MBBS curriculum, and our own student guidance service starts pointing students toward the right resources from their first year, not their last.

The pass rate gap between well-prepared and under-prepared graduates is large — it has far more to do with consistent preparation throughout the six-year programme than with which country or university you attended, provided it's genuinely NMC approved.

Our advice to every student: treat FMGE/NEXT prep as a parallel track from day one, not a scramble in your final semester.
